Continental Congressman, Military Leader. Long active in the New Hampshire militia, Folsom served in the French and Indian War as a Captain, later rising through the ranks to become Colonel of New Hampshire's Fourth Regiment, which he commanded at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was soon promoted to Brigadier General and commanded New Hampshire troops sent to Massachusetts during the siege of Boston. Later, as a Major General, he was responsible for planning and overseeing the deployment of New Hampshire troops that took part in the attack on Fort Ticonderoga. Also active in local and state government, Folsom was the longtime Moderator of the Exeter Town Meeting, and was a member of the Continental Congress in 1774 and again from 1777 to 1780. In 1778 he was a member of New Hampshire's Executive Council, and in 1783 he was President of the state's Constitutional Convention. In 1783 he became Chief Justice of New Hampshire's Court of Common Pleas, a position in which he was still serving at his death.
