Author. She was a Hugo and Nebula Award winning science fiction writer. Best known for her 1977 Hugo winning novel, "Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang", she also won a non-fiction Hugo in 2006 for a book about her work with the Clarion Writers Workshop, which she co-founded, and three Nebula Awards for shorter works. She also wrote extensively in the mystery genre. She was married twice, the second time to Damon Knight, an influential science fiction editor and critic. She was one of the founders of the Science Fiction Writers of America--its Solstice Award was renamed in her honor in 2016. She was selected for induction into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2003.
