Melvin Riley, 93 of Atlanta, MO passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016 at his home east of Atlanta.

On April 1, 1923, Melvin Henry Riley was born at home to Ernest and Mary Ethel Tilden Riley of Huntsville, Missouri, the second of four children.

Melvin attended the Hardister Country School and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1941. He also completed training as a welder in Columbia, MO.

In 1942 he was working as a welder in the state of Oregon on Liberty Ships. Despite repeated requests for him to remain as a welder, Melvin felt the call to serve his country; he was inducted into the US Army on February 3, 1943. He was honorably discharged on January 28, 1946 just days short of serving three years.

August 16, 1944 he married Minnie Lou Swetnam who survives of the home. Also surviving are 4 children: Melva Challis and husband Lyall of Cambalda, Western Australia, James Melvin Riley and wife Lou of Oregon, MO, Karen Lynn Rupright and husband Jon of Columbia, MO and John Mark Riley and wife Florence of Atlanta, MO; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; 1 sister, Martha Sue of Smithville, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, his valued church family, countless friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Irene and brother Merlin.

Melvin served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and simply valued member of the Atlanta Baptist Church for many years and until the day of his death. He was also a member of the National Farmers Organization and tirelessly served in many capacities from its beginning in the early 1960s.

A life well lived is one lived for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...that is descriptive of the life of Melvin Henry Riley.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 21, 2016 from 9-11 a.m. at the Atlanta First Baptist Church with a memorial service at 11.

Memorials are suggested to the Atlanta First Baptist Church and can be left at the church or mailed to the Riley Family, 31832 State Hwy M, Atlanta, MO 63530.
