Mr. Hollis and his twin sister, were born in Macon, Georgia. He graduated from Lanier School for Boys and enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the aircraft carrier, Kula Gulf. After returning home from the war, he married his sweetheart, Clara Allee Gardiner on June 15, 1949. They enjoyed 68 years together before her death in June 2017.

Mr. Hollis attended Georgia Tech and completed his degree in Architecture at Southern Technical College. After working for Ella Mae League and Elliott Dunwody, he was a principal in the Macon architectural firm Matthews, Holliday, Couch and Hollis (which became Holliday, Couch, Hollis and Jelks.) He worked on many phases of the Macon Hospital (Medical Center of Central Georgia) from the 1950s to the 1980s. His work included churches, schools, hospitals and homes in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Louisiana.

Bill Hollis was a builder, engineer, handyman and counselor to his family. His ability to design, create, complete and repair anything in life was a given for his children. He was a recreational pilot and built his own Ultralight airplane.

Mr. Hollis was a member of Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and taught Sunday School for years. He faithfully and quietly opened the church each Sunday for 35 years.
