Mrs. Hollis was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Macon as a young child. She attended Alexander IV Elementary School, A. L. Miller High School and Wesleyan College. She was a member of the Junior League of Macon, PEO and the Colonial Dames.

She married William E. Hollis on June 15, 1949, and enjoyed 68 years with him. Her family was her greatest joy and she spent countless hours volunteering with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and performing at area elementary schools with the puppet theater troupe of the Junior League. She enjoyed travel and shared many RV trips wth family and friends, including a trip to Alaska.

She was a loyal member of Martha Bowman UMC where she served as Youth Leader for 20 years, Communion Steward for 41 years and was a teacher for the Tom Johnson Sunday School Class for over 40 years. She served on many boards and committees at the church.

Mrs. Hollis opened and operated the Highland Camp for Girls in the 1950s. Many of the youth in Macon enjoyed riding horses, swimming and archery under her leadership.

Together with her husband, she was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross serving as a representative for Disaster Services in locations including NYC after 9/11; New Orleans after Katrina; Guam, Puerto Rico and Miami following hurricanes and tornadoes. Even in her 70s she worked tirelessly for three weeks at a time in disaster conditions bringing comfort and relief to victims. After their travel to disaster areas was curtailed, they continued to serve the local Red Cross chapter providing help to families displaced by fire.

She is predeceased by her parents, Roberta Jones Gardiner and Alfred Senour Gardiner and her son, William Eugene Hollis, Jr. Her survivors are her wonderful husband, William E. Hollis; daughters, Sydney Sams (Alfred, Jr.) and Dr. Roberta (Andrews) Dixon (Mike); daughter-in-law, Karen Murphy Hollis; sister, Roberta Robinson; brother, Dr. George Gardiner; grandchildren, T. Alfred Sams, III (Riley), William E. Hollis, III, Hollis Sams Marbut (Thomas), Allee Dixon Avery (Joe), Charles R. Hollis (Anna), Christopher M. Dixon (Laura), Kelly Dixon Simons (Ronnie); and ten great-grandchildren all of whom have looked to her as their guide, strength and comfort. They will strive to continue her legacy of faithful service to God, family and others. The family thanks her special caregivers Celena Williams, Rose Sanders, Edna Padgett; those with Loving Heart Companion Services- Rosalind Benjamin, Chadis Darrisaw, Sheila Sands and Sylvia Scott; and Donna Battson with Pine Point Hospice.
