G. Philip Allen

G. Philip Allen, 85, of Dallas City, Ill., died at 11:45 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 1, 1921, in Hutchinson, Kan., he was the son of George V. and Edith E. (Greenbank) Allen. On Oct. 12, 1947, he married Mary E. Manuel in Avon, Ill.

Mr. Allen joined his parents in the publishing of Dallas City Enterprise for 40 years before retiring in 1986. Following his retirement, he was a letterpress operator at Dodd Printing and Stationary in Fort Madison. He was a graduate of Dallas City Community High School and Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. He was sports editor of the college newspaper, The Megaphone, president of Mu Theta Nu fraternity, and a member of the C-S golf team.

He served in World War II as an Army Air Corps weather officer in the South Pacific. He was an assistant chief for the Dallas City Volunteer Fire Department for more than 50 years, and later became a radio operator. He was a member of Dallas City United Methodist Church, where he served as financial secretary and trustee.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Allen-Stewart of Round Lake Heights, Ill., and Maria Allen of Chicago; two sons, Andrew Allen of Chicago, and Anthony Allen of Kewanee, Ill.; five grandchildren; and one sister, Marian Anderson of Midway, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Following the services, the body will be cremated. A private burial will be in Harris Cemetery, near Dallas City.
