DARLINGTON - Richard Gerald Williams, husband of Tallualah Newsome Williams, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2009, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born November 9, 1922, in Pamplico, SC, he was the son of the late Daniel Huffman Williams and Mary Francis Cox Turner Willams. Mr. Williams was a faithful and longstanding member of the First Baptist Church of Darlington, where he served as a deacon, and an usher for many years. He was a dedicated member of the Hardin-Jolley Men's Sunday School Class.

Mr. Williams was the owner and operator of Williams Auto Rebuilders for 42 years from 1953 until he retired in 1995. He served his country honorably from 1940 through the conclusion of WWII arriving on the shores of Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy Invasion, participating in the fierce fighting of the Herstgen Forest over two winter months, with the 8th Infantry, 28th Division, I Company, whose members were so devastated in that conflict that they were forced to reorganize repeatedly. He loved to recall the famous line delivered to a surrendering German General, "These are my credentials," knowing he was one of them.

Surviving are his faithful and loving wife of 58 years, Tallualah Newsome Williams of Darlington; beloved son, Richard Gerald "Gerry" Williams, Jr. and his wife Beatty Coker Williams of Columbia, two treasured daughters, Dena and husband William Anderson of Raleigh, Susie and husband Ronnie Byrd of Darlington; five grandchildren, Jonna Anderson Yarbrough and husband David of Greensboro, North Carolina, John William Anderson, III and wife Carlye of Columbus, Georgia, David Michael Anderson of Oahu, Hawaii, Kirby Byrd Boyce and husband Austin of Florence, and Wesley Richard Byrd of Alma, Georgia; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anderson, Kate Yarbrough, Abby Anderson and Wesley Boyce.

The Reverends Ken Sandifer and Renny Johnson will officiate. Pallbearers will be nephews, Kenny Bryant, Johnny Newsome, Rett Newsome, Tripp Newsome, and Will Newsome, along with dear friends, Wes Woodard and Ty Woodard. The family will receive friends from 5-7 Monday evening at Belk Funeral Home in Darlington, and at other times at the home.
