Zilpha Irene Small, 92, of Smiths Creek, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 29, 2016. She was born January 31, 1924 in Isabella County, Michigan to the late George and Effie Merrihew. She married Frederick J. Small on June 14, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant. He died December 31, 1989.
Zilpha worked at Kresge from 1958 to 1973 then worked at K-mart from 1973 until her retirement in 1987. She then worked part time at Vinckier Food Store in Wadhams. She enjoyed roller coasters, traveling, working in her yard, crocheting and even made a blanket for each child, grandchild and was working on one for each great and great great grandchild. She went every Tuesday morning with the girls for coffee and donuts.
She is survived by nine children, Steven (Sharon) Small, Barbara (James) Taylor, Joanne Small, Master Sgt. Robert (Carlene) Small, Helen Lump, Donald (Debbie) Small, Raymond (Mary) Small, Mary (Ed) Vazquez and Kathleen (Clare) Hascall; 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; her brother, Gale (Betty) Merrihew; and a sister, Aletha Chaffee.
She is preceded in death by two grandchildren; two brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street, Port Huron. Burial will be in Cadillac Memorial Gardens East, 38425 Garfield Road, Clinton Twp., MI 48038.
