Dr. William P. Spence, of Pinehurst, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, at his home.
Dr. Spence was born in Stuart, Fla., on Nov. 20, 1925, and grew up in St. Louis, Mo. He served two years in the United States Navy during World War II.
He obtained bachelor, master’s and doctorate degrees at the University of Missouri at Columbia, and began his university teaching at The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. Dr. Spence became a professor at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich., and later was promoted to dean of the School of Construction Technology at Pittsburg State University, of the Kansas State University System.
Dr. Spence wrote over 48 books in the areas of engineering, building construction, architecture, graphic reproduction, woodworking basics and other related areas that were used in universities in the United States and around the world. Many of his books are printed in foreign languages.
Dr. Spence traveled extensively around the world with his wife, Bettye M. Spence.
He is survived by his wife, Bettye; a daughter, Laura L. Spence; and son, Michael Allen Spence and wife, Kim. Additionally, he is survived by a granddaughter, Trisha L. Canady and husband; two great-granddaughters, Brittney Sims and Taylor Sims; and two great-great-grandsons.
Dr. Spence had a long history with Moore County in that he was one of the original developers of Whispering Pines Country Club in the 1950s, overseeing the cutting out of the original roads, selling lots on Thaggard Lake and drawing the architectural plans for the houses.
Dr. Spence and his wife retired to Pinewild in Pinehurst 26 years ago. He served on the Board of Adjustment for Pinehurst for many years and also as the building inspector for Pinewild. Dr. and Mrs. Spence were members of The Member’s Club, Pinehurst Resort and many other social groups in the area. Dr. Spence and wife were long-term members of The Village Chapel, in Pinehurst.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 20, by The Village Chapel pastors, with interment at Pinelawn Memorial Gardens.
