Mrs. Bettye Spence, of Pinehurst, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Quail Haven Skilled Nursing Center.
Mrs. Spence grew up in Missouri where her father was a Methodist minister and later a Chaplain in the Air Force. She graduated from Iowa State University, Ames Iowa, and taught in the public schools of Iowa and Missouri. She met and married William P. Spence was in NROTC during World War II. In these early days she sold Comptons Pictured Encylopedias and was a top seller for the company.
The Spences lived in Virginia, Michigan, Kansas (where Bill was Dean of the School of Technology at Pittsburg State University) and Pinehurst, North Carolina. They traveled to Europe, China, The Soviet Union, Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Japan.
Bettye Spence was active in the Alfred Moore Chapter of the DAR in Southern Pines and later joined the new Temperance Smith Alston Chapter in Pinehurst eventually becoming Vice Regent and then Regent. For three years she was the State Chairperson National Achievement Award recipient. She also became District 7 Director for several years.
Local activities include serving as secretary and visitor for the Foundation of the Village Chapel, Pinehurst, member of the Colonial Dames 17th Century, member of the English Speaking Union, Vice President and year book editor for the College Club and member of PEO. Bettye was an avid Bridge player and at one time a member of seven groups. Bettye did all the word processing on the textbooks and trade books her husband wrote for over 40 years.
Bettye and Bill Spence had one daughter, Laura L. Spence, and a son Michael Spence. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Trisha L. Canady and husband; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Sims and Taylor Sims; and two great-great- grand-sons.
Bettye Spence and husband were long term members of the Village Chapel, in Pinehurst.
A memorial service has been held by The Village Chapel with interment at Pinelawn Memorial Gardens.
