G. H. Althaus Killed In Crash

Three Injured in Two-Car Collision

Gordon H. Althaus, 16, Lafayette Route 2, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday in Memorial hospital from injuries received about two hours earlier in a two-car crash two miles northwest of Waynesfield, in Auglaize Co.

Three others were injured in the accident. Mrs. Gilbert Althaus, 20, sister-in-law of the dead man, is in Memorial hospital with a possible fractured pelvis and her condition was reported as fair. James Shrider, 17, Lafayette, was treated for bruises at Memorial hospital and released, as was Mrs. Eldon Whetstone, 42, Buckland.

Althaus was riding in an automobile being driven south on the Santa Fe Line Rd. by his brother, Gilbert Althaus, 21, of near Waynesfield, according to state highway patrolmen, when it figured in a collision with a car driven east on the Bingville Rd. by Gene Sprague, 24, Buckland, at the intersection of the two roads.

Also riding in the Althaus car were Mrs. Gilbert Althaus and Shrider.

Sprague was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Whetstone, Jack Sprague, 19, Gene Wagner, 21, and Thomas Anderson, 25, all of Buckland.

Harry E. Lewis, Allen-co coroner, investigated the accident and returned a verdict of accidental death, he announced Saturday morning.

Atlhaus was a member of the Ebenezer Mennonite church west of Bluffton.

He is survived by his parents, Loren E. and Nellie Woods Althaus, Lafayette Route 2; one brother, Gilbert, and one sister, Mrs. Glendoris Van Waning, Tomawanda, N.Y.

The body was removed to the Diller funeral home in Bluffton pending completion of funeral arrangements.

Crash Victim's Rites Monday

Gordon Althaus, 16, Killed in Auto Mishap

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Methodist church in Lafayette for Gordon Herbert Althaus, 16, Lafayette Route 2, who was injured fatally in a highway accident Friday night two miles northwest of Waynesfield in Auglaize Co. Burial will be in Ebenezer Mennonite cemetery west of Bluffton.

The body is at the Diller funeral home, Bluffton, and will be removed to the church at 1:45 p.m. Monday.

Althaus died at 9:45 p.m. Friday in Memorial hospital of head injuries received two hours earlier in a crash involving vehicles driven by the victim's brother, Gilbert Althaus, 21, of near Waynesfield, and Gene Sprague, 21, Buckland.

Althaus was driving south on the Santa Fe Line-rd near the Allen Co. line, state highway patrolmen said, when his vehicle collided with Sprague's car being driven east on the Bingville Rd. at 6:50 p.m. Friday.

Three other persons were injured. Mrs. Gilbert Althaus, 20, sister-in-law of the victim, is in fair condition in Memorial hospital with a possible fractured pelvis. James Shrider, 17, Lafayette, and Mrs. Eldon Whetstone, 24, Buckland, were treated for bruises at Memorial hospital and released. All were taken to the hospital from the accident scene by a Weygandt ambulance from Waynesfield.

Other passengers were Mrs. Gilbert Althaus and Shrider.
