MRS. FREDRICKA (COOK) STEVENS
MARCH 5, 1886
After a lingering Illness, passed away at her home in this city at 6:80 p. m. Friday, March 26; aged 57 years, 8 months, and 7 days. Mrs. Stevens, whose maiden name was Cook, was born in Langrich, West Phalia, Germany, November 19. 1828, and as she grew to womanhood enjoyed the advantages of the excellent schools of her native land. In 1868, at the age of twenty-five, she came to America and first resided in the city of Brooklyn, then in New York, and again in Brooklyn. Ten years after her arrival in America she was united in marriage to her late husband, Carl Anton Stevens. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens continued to reside in New York until 1871, when, with their three daughters, they came to Chatsworth. The winter previous to their coming to Chatsworth Mrs Stevens suffered from a long spell of sickness, and it was during this illness that the attending physician first discovered the tumor which after so many years caused her death. Since coming to Chatsworth Mrs. Stevens’ life has been one of exclusive devotion to the rearing and education of her three daughters, to whom she clung with a mother’s warmest affection, and in her long illness she found consolation in their constant and cheerful attention to her every want, which attention never ceased during her long illness. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Elfrink, were held from the German Evangelical church on Monday, and were largely attended. The reverend gentleman chose for his text the 38th chapter of Isaiah, 1st verse, and preached a very interesting sermon. His address of sympathy to the mourners was affecting, and scarcely a listener but shed tears during its delivery. The death of both father and mother following so close upon one another is calculated to break stouter hearts than these three orphan sisters possess, and they deserve, as they will undoubtedly receive, the sincere sympathy, tender care, and good advice of all.
