Gille Peveto was born in Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, to Michel Pevoto II and Caroline Milberry Arthur. He was the grandson of Michael Piveateau I and Apolonie Susanne Broussard. As a Confederate Soldier, he fought in the Battle of Sabine Pass. On August 8, 1864, he married Sarah Strahan in Orange County, Texas. They made their home in Johnson Bayou, Cameron Parish, Louisiana until a devastating hurricane in 1886. They then moved to Orange County, Texas, and later settled in Nederland, Jefferson County, Texas, where the First Baptist Church was initially named Peveto Baptist Church in his honor after he paid off the church mortgage. He was living in Nederland,Jefferson County, Texas, at the time of his death.
