Jack was preceded in death by father, Horace E. Hayes and mother, Mary Avis Hayes of Crossville, TN. Jack is survived by his loving wife of nearly 58 years, Joy (Rose) Hayes; children Greg Hayes (Janet), Shari O'Neal (Pat), Cindee Bailey (Jeff) and Kim Powers (Darrel). He was a very proud Papa to four grandchildren, Nolan (Kelsey), Nathan (Ashley), Madysen and Micah plus four great-grandchildren, Branley, Beckett, Brynne and Silas; also brothers Ken (Dorothy), Joe (Marian), sisters Marilyn Ritzman and Irma O'dell (Ed).
Jack was born on Aug. 30, 1936, in Knoxville, TN. During his teen years his family moved to Crossville, TN, where he lived until he joined the Navy and served four years. In October 1959, after being discharged from the Navy, he moved to Tampa, FL, to court the love of his life, Joy. They married in July 1960. Jack went to work for Atlantic Coastline Railroad and relocated his family to Lakeland, FL, in September 1964. Jack retired in December 1998, from CSX Railroad after 36 1/2 years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1965, where he served the Lord and worked the Bus Ministry for many years. He enjoyed family time, traveling, fishing and all things to do with trains.
A gathering of family and friends was held at 2 p.m., followed by funeral services at 3 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at Lakeland Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, 2125 S. Bartow Rd., Lakeland, FL 33801.
