My grandparents, Anna Bush and Wade Henry Tarkington were married on 3 July 1901, likely in Hallettsville, Lavaca, TX where both were born. Anna taught school and Wade 'read law'. That was how rural lawyers began their practice. Wade informed clients of his desire to be their counselor in preference to being their lawyer. They made their home in Taylor which was a good ride from the county seat in Georgetown (Williamson County, TX).

Her father (Andrew Jackson Bush, Sr) was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which only observed Baptism rites by immersion.

Wade Henry was raised in the Episcopal Church which did NOT require immersion for the rite of Baptism. The couple solved the difference by agreeing, before their marriage, to become Methodists and raise their family as Methodists. This distressed both families (Bush and Tarkington) but I believe my grandparents were married by the bride's father.

The happy couple decided to do everything in the Methodist denomination. About that time the Methodist church in Texas established a new university in Dallas, Southern Methodist University, about 1911. It had no reputation and only a few students. Anna and Wade determined to send all of their children to SMU.

Wade Henry Tarkington died of pneumonia in 1928, a year ahead of the Great Depression. Anna Tarkington had a home built in Dallas close to SMU. The widow joined Highland Park Methodist Church immediately upon moving to Dallas. That church exists on a corner of the land owned by SMU.

First daughter Helen was in the class of 1921. She wed Cameron Fairchild before graduating. Their second child, Henry, died prior to his second birthday. Andrew attended the William Marsh Rice Institute (now Rice University) for a year and then transferred to SMU from which he graduated at the depth of the depression. He later became an SMU trustee. Daughter "Anna Wade", the youngest, graduated from SMU and was wed in Highland Park Methodist Church.

Anna was an exceptional student in Hallettsville public schools. She enjoyed math. After Wade's death, she tutored many SMU students in math, algebra and trigonometry.

My grandmother was a 'preacher's kid' but she had no vices. She gave much of her time to Sunday School. She "rolled bandages" for the Red Cross during both World Wars.

She made legendary food in her kitchen . 'Mamaw' loved card games and singing. She was afflicted with cataracts in later life and had high blood pressure, possibly due to her coffee intake. She fertilized her garden flowers with spent coffee grounds.

I remember her as a gentle Southern Lady. She loved reading the Bible and she knew it well. I feel blessed to have known her.
