Harold was born February 18, 1938 in McLeansboro, IL, the son of Don and Emma (Johnson) French. He married Marjorie Hollister at the Port Byron Methodist Church on April 14, 1962. Harold was a Shift Supervisor for 3M retiring after 30 years of service. In addition to working at 3M he also farmed and built several homes in the area. He was dedicated to his community, serving on the Village of Port Byron Board of Trustees for several years. He also was the Building Inspector for the Villages of Port Byron and Rapids City. Harold lived his life for the betterment of those around him. He genuinely cared about others and his community and always had a smile on his face.
Harold loved construction and his years in farming. He enjoyed driving his red truck around; looking at the crops and visiting with everyone he encountered. He loved his coffee and John Deere tractors and shared the thrill of Ford Mustangs with all of us. He planted gardens in spring and put out feed for the birds and deer in the winter.
Harold’s greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. He spent his life in the company of family; enjoying vacations, swimming, baseball games, golf events, family reunions, and pets. Not a day went by that he didn’t stop in to check on his kids. He’d share a few laughs and go on about his day. We all miss that.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; son, Jay (Sue) French, Lisle, IL; daughter, Dee (Kyle) Jenkins, Port Byron; 5 grandchildren, Brady, Trace and Kade Jenkins, Jillian and Lauren French; 4 sisters, Dolores Young, McLeansboro, IL, Shirley Hollister, Port Byron, Barbara Childers, Mt. Vernon, IL and Carolyn (Gary) Daniels,
McLeansboro, IL, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, LeRoy French; and 4 brothers-in-law, Bill Young, Jon Hollister, Don Childers and John Todd.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Betty’s Harbor - New Perspective, and the caring staff at Heartland Hospice.
