An Early Settler of Winslow Passed Away in Chicago.

Winslow, Jan 2 - News has been received here of the death of A. Buchanan, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. I. L. Holt, in Chicago, where he was kindly cared for. He was born in the township of Dumfries, near Galt, Ontario, and came to Winslow in the summer of 1856, and for many years worked at several branches of mechanism. He rebuilt the old sawmill at Honey Creek, and did business there until the death of his wife, which occurred in 1886, after which he has been traveling in the car with his son Robert, who is well known in the west as a musician and the conductor of a repertoire show. He was a man who had many good qualities of head and heart. He was aged 77 years, two months and five days. His remains were laid at rest in the cemetery at Waukegan, Ill., beside those of his wife and son Henry.

There died in Chicago on the 24th ult., Archibald Buchanan, an old resident of North Dumfries and Galt. He was born in Dumfries, near Branchton, in 1822, and was the youngest son of the late John Buchanan, of that township, who came to this section some years before. His relatives in Galt are two sisters, Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Brodish. He was a painter and turner, having learned his trade with Paul Hoffman, on North Water Street. In 1856 he went to Illinois, where he resided until the time of his death. His wife died some ten years ago, and a family of six children survive him. He was an influential citizen wherever his lot was cast, and his kindly and genial disposition made him numerous friends. He died surrounded by all his family but one. The remains were interred in the family plot at Waukegan, Ill.
