Actress. She was an award-winning star who was best known for her role as 'Katherine Romano,' the grandmother on the CBS sitcom "One Day at a Time" from 1979 to 1984. She started performing at the age of four, appearing in vaudeville and touring with comedy troupes. She later attended Los Angeles Junior College and studied acting with Austrian-born director Max Reinhardt. She experienced academic difficulties due to an undiagnosed hearing problem, but it would later be surgically corrected. She was twenty-one years old when she made her first Broadway appearance in the 1941 play "Let's Face It" with Danny Kaye and Eve Arden. She would go on to appear in such Broadway plays as "By Jupiter," "My Dear Public," "Jackpot," and "Bloomer Girl," before appearing in "Love Life" in 1949. She earned a Tony Award for her performance in the play and would go on to appear in various Broadway plays throughout her career. She made her first television appearance on the television series "The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre" in 1949. She would later earn two Emmy Awards for her appearances on the television show "Caesar's Hour" in both 1956 and 1957. Besides "Caesar's Hour and "One Day at a Time," her television credits would include "Westinghouse Playhouse," "Burke's Law," "Mary Tyler Moore," "Love, American Style," "The Love Boat," "Hotel," and "Coach." Before acting on both Broadway and television, she appeared in the 1939 film "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex." She went on to appear in such films as "A Child is Born" (1939), "The Band Wagon" (1953), and "Harper Valley P.T.A." (1978). She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
