Teacher, Musician, Conductor, Erasmus "Eric" Stein, was born in Ukraine, and died in Salina, Kansas. Erasmus "Eric" Stein, a German-Russian immigrant escaped Soviet Union and communism with his family during World War II. His German family was among those who immigrated to Russia to help the farm economy there. Stein was born to Raphael and Rosa Stein. The youngest in a musical family, Eric Stein loved music and pursued a career therein. By his early 20s, Stein was an assistant conductor of an Ukrainian orchestra, then principal conductor. He received his master's degree from the Kiev Conservatory of Music. In 1942, with war eminent, Stein and his wife and children left Ukraine. They walked some 450 miles out of the Soviet Union through Czechoslovakia into Germany. As war was around them, they walked only at night, carrying what they could, staying in abandoned farm houses. Determined to immigrate to the United States of America, Stein learned of jobs there for certain professions. One of those was in Rooks County, Kansas as an organist and a janitor. Unable to speak English, Stein thought janitor had something to do with the work of an organist in Kansas. The family boarded a ship for New York, then a train to Damar, Kansas on December 20, 1949 without money or worldly goods. The vast Kansas farm fields reminded Stein of Ukraine therefore he felt at home right away, except for the language. The Steins became naturalized citizens in 1956. Stein developed a choir with 40 to 50 people in Damar. This soon brought other job offers resulting in the family moving in 1951, to Salina, Kansas. Stein worked as a music teacher at Sacred Heart High School and also as an organist and choir director at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He then began work at Marymount College in 1955 while remaining in the choir director's position. This was the same year Eric Stein founded and conducted the Salina Symphony, in Salina. He also conducted the Piano Teachers League and the Massed Piano Festival. He was the sixth conductor of the Salina Municipal Band, retiring his baton after 44 years in 2004. He received a music degree in 1953 from Marymount College, and then taught students for decades as an associate professor. He maintained a cello and bass teaching studio in Salina. Stein was the ultimate musician, demanding the most out of every musician, both musically and technically. He in turn showed encouragement, support and kindness. He was a gentle man who loved music and he loved people too. He married his second wife in 1979.
