Charles Edward McKenna Jr., 83, died peacefully at his home November 28, 2017 in Woodstock, Virginia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017 at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 315 N. Main Street, Woodstock, Virginia, 22664. Burial will follow in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, VA. Full military honors will be conducted by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, VA. A reception will be held in the parish hall immediately following the burial.

Charles was born June 19, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland, a son of the late Charles and Secondina McKenna.

He graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in Business Administration, and then served in the United States Army as a specialist with the Combat Engineers. He continued his education at George Washington University with a MS in International Affairs, and completed the Resident Program at the National War College.

Charles retired as the Assistant Deputy Commander of the Naval Supply Systems Command of the United States Navy after 37 years of federal service, earning several distinguished awards along the way.

"Chuck" was a great family man, a generous and loving father and grandfather.

He married Elvira Quinn in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 12, 1963. The couple had five children together including Elena, who died in infancy.

Chuck was deeply involved with church and community service, including the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed Civil War history, gardening, and Washington, D.C. Sports.

His family and friends will always remember him as a gentleman with a great sense of humor.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Elvira of Woodstock, Virginia; his sons, Martin of Fort Myers, Florida, Matthew of Centerville, Ohio, Daniel of Bristow, Virginia and Mitchell of Ashburn, Virginia. He was "Pop-Pop" to 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Viewing and receiving of friends will be held at St. John Bosco Catholic Church on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Charles' honor be made to St. John Bosco Catholic Church Building Fund, 315 N. Main Street, Woodstock, VA 22664.

Stover Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Strasburg, VA is serving the family of Mr. McKenna.
