Budoff Budoff, Penny Wise, M.D., Dr. Budoff died in her home in Delray Beach, Florida on M-December 6, 2008. Wife, mother, physician, author, medical researcher, Dr. Budoff M-practiced on Long Island for M-thirty-three years. After suffering with rheumatoid M-arthritis from 1987-2007, she contracted ALS, (Lou Gehrig's disease) which caused her death from respiratory failure. She leaves Sy, her loving husband of forty-six years, their son Jeff (a hand and upper M-extremity surgeon in Houston and editor of five surgical textbooks), his wife and their M-infant son and daughter, Their beloved M-beautiful daughter, Cindy, died June 5, 2007 at thirty-nine from diabetic ketoacidosis. In the seventies, her seminal research to M-alleviate menstrual pain was published in JAMA and later in the NEJM. Prior to her M-research, menstrual pain was thought to be a psychological affliction. This breakthrough established a biochemical basis for cramps. It brought instant television appearances in the U.S. as well as lectures in London and South Africa. Her first book was "No More Menstrual Cramps and Other Good News" (1980). The New York Times on September 16, 1982, called her "a pioneer in women's health." Her second best selling book was "No More Hot Flashes and Other Good News" (1983). It cautioned women against radical mastectomy and unnecessary M-hysterectomies, giving them the detailed medical information they needed to question their doctors and share the decisions that M-affected their lives. Her first two books M-started a quiet revolution helping end the M-paternalism in women's medical care. In 1985, Dr. Budoff founded the first M-independent women's health center. M-Employing mostly women doctors, the M-center became a model for hospitals and other physician groups. It was featured in multiple women's and business magazines, including Time and Business Week. M-Gynecology, family practice, gastro-M-enterology, cardiology, endocrinology, M-podiatry, dermatology, breast surgery and radiology were onsite. All doctors shared one chart so that there was no confusion about medications or blood work. Although she was not a surgeon, Dr. Budoff spent much of her time giving second opinions to women who were told they needed a M-hysterectomy or breast cancer surgery. In the eighties, she advised many of her M-patients to have a new procedure called a lumpectomy, rather than a radical M-mastectomy or mastectomy. Because of her expertise about hormones, she successfully treated many women who were told they needed a hysterectomy for bleeding M-problems, saving them major surgery. In 1982, Dr. Budoff formulated the first M-vitamins for women. Initially available only to her patients, the vitamins were expanded into a small mail order business named Bonne Forme. Dr. Budoff continued to M-supervise all product formulations. Her last book was "No More Hot Flashes and Even More Good News" (1998). Services will be held at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel at 9:30 AM, 5808 W. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach.
