Cleo Mae (Noble) Howard of Costa Mesa / Fountain Valley, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010 at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, CA at the age of 89. She was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend and everyone whose life she touched will miss her dearly.

Cleo was born in Jeffers, MN on February 17, 1920. After graduating from Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in 1940, she joined the Navy. She was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she (a Navy Ensign) met and married George "Smokey" Martin Howard in 1945. The next year Cleo and Smokey moved to California where she worked as a Registered Nurse and raised two children, William Eugene Howard and Linda Sue (Howard) Arnold. Eventually the family settled in Costa Mesa, where Cleo was an elementary school nurse.

Cleo was a dedicated gardener with a real "green thumb". She loved orchids and is well known for her orchid garden and her many other tropical plants. She was also a devoted Christian and long-time member of Mesa Verde Methodist Church in Costa Mesa.

She is survived by two her two children, William Eugene Howard and Linda Sue (Howard) Arnold, a grandson - Kevin Joseph Arnold, a granddaughter - Sandi Lynn Arnold, great-granddaughter - Robin Elizabeth Singley, and sister - Nila Ann (Noble) Meyer, of Kansas, and more than 20 nieces and nephews.

The Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Pacific View Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3500 Pacific View Dr., Corona Del Mar, CA. The viewing will begin at 9:00 am with Funeral Services at 9:30 am. In lieu of cut flowers, the family requests that those wishing to do so, bring a living plant that will later be used to create garden memorial for Cleo, or donations to your favorite charity.
