He was born June 29, 1946, in Jamestown, the son of the late John C. and Marian Magnuson Oberg.
John graduated from Southwestern Central High School class of 1964. He received a degree in applied science from Jamestown Community College and later graduated from Massey College in Atlanta Ga., where he earned his associate degree in fine arts/interior design.
On June 6, 1966, John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam as a field systems specialist. He earned the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged on May 24, 1970. John worked for Wellman’s Furniture, Lawson’s Furniture Barn, Thomas Webco, Holmlund’s Wallpaper and Paint, and retired from Moran’s Floor Store.
John was an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church (formerly Chandler Street Baptist Church) where he taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent and served on the deacon board. He sang in the church choir for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Jamestown Jaycee’s, sang in the Viking Male Chorus and was a longtime member of the American Union of Swedish Singers (AUSS). Music was a very big part of his life. As a young man, he spent summers at Chautauqua singing and performing. He also was a long time season ticket holder to Little Theater and acted in a couple plays.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille J. Root Oberg, whom he married July 6, 1968 and who died October 25, 2014; a son, Todd A. Oberg who died October 26, 1974; a brother, Randy Oberg, and a sister, Joyce Saxton.
