LUBBOCK - Elouise Appling Jones, 88, of Lubbock died Friday, March 30, 2007, at her home. The family will receive visitors Monday, April 2, 2007, from 6-8 p.m. at Rix Funeral Directors. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Keith Wiseman and Rev. Lee Crouch officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.

She was born March 13, 1919, to Palmer H. and Carrie Hinds Appling in Ellis County, near Waxahachie, Texas. The family moved to Childress in 1925, where Elouise was in school until 1932, when the family moved to Forreston and later to Slaton where she graduated from high school in 1936. She attended Texas Tech and married W. L. Jones Jr. in November 1938. Three sons were born to the couple in Lubbock. In 1947, the young family moved to Plainview. While living in Plainview, Elouise received her BS degree from Wayland Baptist University in 1958. She taught school for 21 years in Plainview, Houston, Wheaton, Ill., and later Abernathy after moving back to Lubbock in 1974. She retired from teaching in 1981. She was one of the organizers for the Lubbock Area Coalition for Literacy in 1988-89; an accomplishment of which she was quite proud. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Tuesday Morning Bible Study, First United Methodist Church, Friendship Sunday School Class and the 42 Club.

Elouise is survived by her husband of 69 years, W.L. "Dub" Jones Jr., three sons, W. Lin Jones, M.D. and wife Candance, Stanley C. Jones, M.D. and wife Kathi, and A. Kent Jones and wife JohnAnn, all of Houston; grandchildren Derek Jones, M.D., Jana Hopkins, Juli Japhet and their mother, Sandra Jones, Stanley Jones Jr., Lindsey Roberson, Jessica Jones and their mother, Molly Jones Lottridge, Jennifer Jones, Patrick Jones and Jackie Jones; eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Pat Appling, Don Appling and Jon Appling.

She was preceded in death by siblings the Rev. W.A. Appling, Mary Davis and Melba Harris, and a daughter-in-law, Lili Jones. The family would like to thank Mrs. Carmen Carter, Mrs. Lupe Meza, Mrs. Christine McCasland and Linda McCasland for their loving care.
