Jack Cole, 92, longtime Sweeny rancher, passed from this life surrounded by his loving children, on Feb. 4, 2018 in Bay City. Jack was born in Forest, Louisiana on Jan. 26, 1926 to Polie E. and Annie (Finley) Cole. He graduated from Sweeny High School in 1947. After graduation, he worked in the oilfield industry as a welder.
He met and married Dorothy Lee Baxter on Dec. 14, 1951 at the First Baptist Church parsonage with their longtime friends Bill & Ernelle Orr as witnesses. In the early 60’s he was able to pursue his love for ranching and raising cattle. Jack spent some of his happiest days cowboying on a horse or riding a tractor. He was a lifetime member of the Brazoria County Cattlemen’s Association and worked at the El Campo Livestock Commission for many, many years. He loved the Lord, his entire family and many friends with a great passion. His hobbies included hunting and fishing with his cousins and close friends.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Ralph Cole (Teresa), Kay Cole (Glen Bell), Kim Sydow (Mark), and Jackie Hornback (George); grandchildren, Laura Cole, Jack Cole(Katie), Dana O’Brien (Nicc), Lane Cole, Liz Cole, Dr. Heather Viamonte (Carlo), Steven Chandler (Amy), Doug Chandler, Josh McKnight (Amber), Rennie McKnight, Bronson Sydow, Riley Hornback and Ryan Hornback; 11 great grandchildren with number 12 coming in May. Jack is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; brother, Louis ; sister, Dorothy Faye.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018 at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Sweeny with John Price officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons and special friend, Mike Sanders.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Jack’s memory to First Baptist Church-Sweeny, Brazoria County Cattlemen’s Association PO Box 818 Angleton, Texas 77516 or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to give a very special thank you to Jack’s caregivers, Rhonda Simpson, Frances Schmidt, Sandra Trevino, and Helen McBee.
