OBITUARY: Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, Friday, 7 January 1955:
Mrs. H. F. Barthel, 88, died at 4:55 a.m. today at her home on Rt. 1, Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Ben Barthel of Denver, Colo., her brother-in-law. Burial will be in the Elkhart Cemetery.
After coming to Texas from her native Illinois in 1890, Mrs. Barthel settled south of Palestine. For many years her home place, know as Barthel Springs, was a gathering place of friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her husband and two sons, Gideon and Ernest Barthel, all of Palestine; a daughter, Mrs. C. E. Douthit of Elkhart; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a brother, Will Wintroth of Riley, Kan., and a sister, Mrs. Emma Tolley, Los Angeles, Calif.
