OBITUARY: Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, Tuesday, 25 January 1972:
Gideon H. Barthel, 81, of Rt. 1, (Old Elkhart Road), died Monday at 12:20 p.m., n a local nursing home following a long illness. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Hassell & Foster Chapel with the Rev. Rupert Miller and the Rev. Bill B. Eads officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Elkhart. The body will be at Hassell & Foster until after chapel rites.
Pallbearers will be C. D. Broadway, J. C. Nation, Alvin Thomas, LeRoy Griffith, Raymond Thomas and Herman Conaway.
Mr. Barthel was born January 31, 1890 in Emporia, Kansas to the late Henry F. Barthel and Mrs. Sarah Winteroth Barthel. Resident of Palestine since age 1, he was a retired farmer and a Methodist. During World War I, he served in the Field Artillery from Feb. 23, 1918 until June 16, 1919. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Belle Douthit Barthel, on September 25, 1967.
Survivors include one son, Floyd F. Barthel of Palestine; one brother, E. J. Barthel, Palestine; one sister, Mrs. C. E. Douthit of Palestine; two granddaughters, Miss Sandra Jean Barthel of Eatontown, N.J., and Mrs. E. C. (Cheryl Anne) Smartt III of Memphis, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.
