Bernice Bell Parker, 78, died Thursday, February 1, 2018, after an illness.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 4, 2018, at College Park Baptist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Lawrence Tillman and Alma Davis Bell. She was predeceased by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Parker; two sisters, Ruth Bell Utsey and Joyce Bell Davis; and five brothers, Richard W. Bell, Joseph G. Bell, Willard L. Bell, Arthur D. Bell, and Laurence D. Bell.

She graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1957, and began her legal career during her junior year of high school as a secretary at Yarborough, Parrott & Anderson Law Firm where she worked for ten years. She then served as a Court Stenographer and secretary for the late Judge William T. McGowan in the county court system for eleven years. Upon consolidation of the county court system, she transferred to the Florence County Clerk of Court’s Office, where she served as Deputy Clerk of Court, Chief Deputy Clerk of Court, and was then elected to the position of Clerk of Court and served for eight years. She was also appointed by the governor of South Carolina to serve as Interim Probate Court Judge for a period of time.

Upon her retirement, by Resolution of the Florence County Bar Association, she was made an honorary member.

She was an active member of College Park Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years in the youth department and later in the Sonshine Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Parker of Florence; three grandchildren, Randall Jason Hawkins, James Martin Hudson, and Melanie Lauren (Caleb) Roth, all of Florence; and a great-grandson Nolan Edward Roth; two sisters, Clarissa Bell Bradford and Betsy A. Bell, both of Florence; two brothers, Bishop A. Bell of Florence and Vernon H. Bell of Holly Hill, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews.
