Charlotte "Char" Joann Piehl, 83 of Arlington, SD passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016 a the Golden LivingCenter, surrounded by her loved ones.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at the Arlington United Methodist Church in Arlington, with Pastor Teresa Whetsel officiating; burial will be in the Arlington City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and preceding services in the church.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Bret Weiland, Andrew Weiland, Eric Weiland, Ethan Urban, Tyler Urban, Jordan Urban, Watson Joseph and Jerry Sampah. The Golden LivingCenter employees will be honorary pallbearers.

Charlotte Joann Piehl was born on May 21, 1933 in Sioux Falls, SD. As an infant, she was adopted by Mart D. and Hazel (Holcomb) Maxwell of Arlington. She grew up in Arlington, SD where she attended grade school and high school. Char and her parents spent summers at their Lake Poinsett family cabin. Char met her future husband, Garold "Gary" Weiland at Lake Poinsett. Gary and Char were married on June 27, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD. They lived in various states while Gary was stationed in the Army. They moved to Arlington in 1969 where they resided with their three children.

On August 4, 1982 Char married Orlynn Piehl of Arlington. Char and Orlynn lived on Orlynn's farm north of Arlington.

Char was a stay at home mother for numerous years. After several years, she decided to keep herself busy with working at The Arlington Sun, the Department of Social Services caring for the elderly in their homes and the Arlington Care Center. She was an avid bowler, and bowled on several bowling teams weekly. Char liked to embroider, was a wonderful cook and was known by her family for her homemade pies.

Char entered the Golden Living Center in Arlington in April of 2015. She enjoyed her time at the Care Center socializing with the residents, helping the kitchen staff, and connecting with the Care Center employees. Char was known for her wittiness, opinion on life and her love to socialize with everyone.

She is survived by her daughter, Lee (Rick) Kasten of Hayti, SD; her son, Steve (Susan) Weiland of Bismarck, ND; her daughter, Sue (Joel) Urban of Watertown, SD; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dick in infancy, her sister Janice Cheney and a son-in-law, Thomas Mix.
