Obituary:
1972 Gilbertsville Free Library.-from the files of her grandson Warren Millard.

On Sunday word was received of the death of Mrs. James Wickes at her daughter's home in Freeport. Though Mrs. Wickes had been gradually failing, she was able to be up every day and still took a keen interest in the world about her, and was anticipating the advent of her hundredth birthday which she missed by 10 days. The large attendance of friends and former neighbors at her funeral, which was held in Christ Church, Gilbertsville on Wednesday (2-9-1972) showed the affection which they held for her. Mrs. Wickes was a woman of rare ability and accomplished many things in the length of days allotted her. Mrs. Wickes was married twice, first to Mr. Tyler of SNB, by whom she had two children, Ethel and Leon Tyler both now deceased. Mrs. Leon Tyler lives in Philadelphia was unable to come to the funeral due to a broken ankle. In 1898 Mrs. Wickes married Mr. James Wickes of Gilbertsville, by whom she had one daughter, Isabel, now Mrs. W. Millard.
During WWI she was one of the organizers of the Red Cross group of women who did such an immense amount of work for that organization in our village. Mrs. Wickes was the Treasurer. She was one of the founders of Tianderah Chapter NSDAR in 1910 and one of the original members of Otsego County Home bureau. She was an active member of Christ Church.
Blessed with good health and ambition, she had wide ranging interests, especially in people, their joys and their problems. This naturally led to an unusual store of information on the local history and genealogy, which she freely shared with those who asked.
Those in town for her funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Houghtaling of North Norwich, Mrs. Henry Houghtaling, Mrs. Harold Anson and Mrs. Richard Senn of New Berlin, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Houghtaling, daughter Joan and Mrs. Richard Parker of McDonough and Mrs. Everett Percival of Mt. Upton.
