The Oklahoman, Friday, Dec 13, 1957:
Andrew M. Coates, 85, of 2201 NW 25, died Thursday at St Anthony Hospital after a heart attack. He had been in the hospital 21 days. Services are set for 11 am Saturday in Trinity Baptist Church where he was an active member. Interment is to be at Rose Hill Burial Park under direction of Guardian Funeral Home.

Born and reared in Indianola, MS, Coats moved to Texas at the age of 17, attending the University Texas in summers, and teaching school winters.

In 1907 he to Oklahoma, first living in Ardmore where he was a cashier for Mutual Life Insurance Co. Two years later he moved with the company to Oklahoma City. From 1914 until 1927 he was state general agent for Equitable Life Ins Co of Iowa, and in 1927 he went into business for himself as an oil and gas operator.

He never retired, staying active in business and social circles "because I took it pretty easy until I was 17," he explained to a reporter this summer. At the time of his death, he had an insurance "agency" desk at his home, and handled real estate and rental property.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs G. A. McDonald, of the home; Mrs Paul A. Guiles, Charlotte, NC; Mrs H. R. Heller, Fort Worth; two sons, Sanford D., 2727 NW Blvd; Tom R., 714 NE 19; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Sam W., Livington, TX; and a sister, Mrs Gabe McKinney, Conroe, TX.
