Barbara Jo Osborn was born the fourth of twelve children to Arthur and Mary (Richards) Brugger on March 6, 1939, in Platteville, WI. She picked up marvelous cooking and baking skills early from her mother.
In high school, Barbara worked as a student-secretary for the Platteville school superintendent, already highly capable of short-hand and typing, excelling in both classes. She boasted of being the fastest running girl in their large high school. While still in school she baked, decorated and sold wedding cakes. She also took apart used clothing sent by an aunt to make shirts, dresses, and even coats for her younger siblings.
Because of the size of their family, Barbara was forced to leave the family farm house to room and work in town after high school graduation. Her first job was as a receptionist and do-all for the local university doctor. She also had fun working evenings in a local cafe.
In those days it was legal for her one-room country school teacher to load up her car with children on Sunday morning and take them to Sunday School and church services. She was a loyal member and worker most of her life in the Free Methodist Church, doing almost anything asked of her including teacher, treasurer, steward and custodian.
At 15 Barbara met her future husband at a hayride and “cornboil” between two church youth groups. Six years later her long-time friend, Robert Osborn, asked her to marry him. After a few weeks of thought she said “yes”, anyway they were married April 28, 1961, by his father, Rev. Robert M. Osborn, in Mitchell, SD. The first two nights of the honeymoon were spent in the big city of Sioux Falls.
Married while on leave from the U.S. Air Force, they then traveled to his next duty station at Syracuse University in New York where their first daughter, Marcia, was born 9 months and 13 days later. After graduation, they then moved to San Angelo, TX, for tech school. About 3 months later, Barb and Marcia re-located near his parents’ new home in Jamestown, ND, while Bob flew off to Darmstadt, W. Germany. Seven months later, Barb and Marcia joined him there. Fourteen months later another daughter, Robin, was born in Wiesbaden. At the end of three years, SSgt Osborn, Barb and their children were transferred back to Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX, where he taught for three years at the Tech School. A little over a year later, their third daughter, Lorilei was born.
Wanting to proceed in the Air Force as Chaplain, Barb’s husband was discharged and went back to college in Greenville, IL. After graduating, they moved to Kentucky to attend Asbury Theological Seminary. Almost right away they were given a full-time pastorate in Irvine, KY, where they lived for three years. From there they settled in Sioux Falls.
Barb started working part-time for the school district in October of 1972. She later helped fill a vacancy in the Head Start program and didn’t retire from the lead secretary position until she was 68 years old. She always enjoyed being a servant and worked beside her husband in various positions in the church and community. She was a skilled and talented crafter with needles and thread, baking and producing wonderful things in oven and stove. Her family was always dear to her and will fiercely miss her.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of nearly 57 years, Rev. Robert W. Osborn, Sioux Falls, SD; three daughters: Marcia (Tim) Goodwin, Hill City, SD, Robin Larson, Riverview, FL, and Lorilei Frentz, Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren: Clarissa (Dan) Roemen, Barbie (Virgil) Claritt, Joseph (Jessica) Prouty, Martin (Krista) Prouty, Christine (Philip) Bacon, Kayleigh Ellefson, Rebekka (Justin) Parrott, Patrick (Katie) Frentz, Madelyn Dolge, Clark Frentz and James Dobbins; 16 great grandchildren: Melanie, Taylor, Miles, Haven, Kahlan, Eleanor, Lucy, Harvey, Franklin, Korey, Aubrie, Brody, Ensley, Emmarie, Shawn and Harper; eight siblings: John (Sharon) Brugger, Platteville, WI, Mary Bendorf, Stitzer, WI, Jim (Mary) Brugger, Loves Park, IL, Tom (Marilyn) Brugger, Platteville, WI, Kristine (Dwain) Becker, Lake Wales, FL, Stephen (Renee) Brugger, Winter Haven, FL, Kevin (Kathy) Brugger, Neillsville, WI, and LeeAnn Stark, Onalaska, WI; one sister-in-law, Carol Brugger, Platteville, WI; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
