FITCHBURG — Herman Leslie Hoven, age 75, of Fitchburg passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 9, 1999, surrounded by all of his family after a long battle with heart disease. He was born on August 28, 1923 in Arena, to Jacob and Susanna Hoven, and graduated from Lone Rock High School. He served his country for four years in the United States Army, as a Staff Sergeant of Company F, 23rd Infantry. He was part of the Armed Forces present at the D-Day invasion of France. He was married to the love of his life, Jacqueline Rose Heizler, at St. Raphael’s Cathedral on November 11, 1950. He worked for 40 years at the Wisconsin Foundry and Machine Company in Madison until his retirement in 1987. He looked forward to the monthly breakfasts with his fellow retirees. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jacqueline; seven children, Patricia (Clifford) Olson of Madison, Judith (Paul) Stitch of Cottage Grove, Cathleen (Joe) DeLao of Middleton, Susan (Timothy) Martihelli of Oregon, Nancy Troia of Madison, Michael (Stacy) Hoven of Belleville, and Thomas (Ginny) Hoven of Oregon; 16 grandchildren, who were one of his greatest sources of pride and enjoyment, David and Matthew, Lien, Jennifer and Lucas Olson, Jessica and Daniel Stitch, Shane and Jacob Sparks, Joseph and Jeremy DeLao, Benjamin and Amanda Martinelli, Anthony Troia, Ryan, Kaitlin, and Cory Hoven, and expectant grandchild Hoven; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey; a sister, Ariadne Nichols of McFarland, a sister-in-law, Jean Hoven of Madison; and brother-in-law James Heizler of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Nicholas, Bernard, and Peter; four sisters, Marie, Armella, Genevieve, and Evelyn; and a granddaughter, Nicole. Herman was an avid sports fan, especially concerning the Green Bay Packers and the University of Wisconsin. He loved watching his grandchildren participate in any school or sport activities. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 1999 at the JOYCE FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Rd., where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a visitation from 9:00 a.m. until M ass at ST. RAPHAELS CATHEDRAL, 222 W. M ain St., Madison. Father David Flanagan will officiate services. Private Interment services will be held at a later time with the family at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Cross Plains.
