Betty Seidler Homann, 99, passed away on January 16, 2018, at Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa, surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Iles-Westover Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Cremation will follow services and private inurnment will be at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines at a later date.
Betty was born November 16, 1918, in Jamaica, IA, to Dr. William A. Seidler and Ethel Knapp Seidler. She graduated from Jamaica High School in 1936 and from Grinnell College in 1940.
On March 23, 1941, Betty was united in marriage to Fred H. Homann. To this union, two children were born: F. William (Bill) Homann and Barbara Jean Homann.
The family enjoyed many years of traveling, fishing, and camping.
After World War II, Betty taught English to the foreign-born under the aegis of the Des Moines Adult Education Department. Betty retired as a reference librarian for the Des Moines Public Library in 1991.
Her memberships included AAUW, Grinnell Club, lifetime membership of The Order of the Eastern Star, IPERS, Daughters of American Revolution, Friendship Force, AARP, Force-1, and also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1951.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Tim) McGuire; granddaughters, Sandra Otto (John Hill), Renee Otto (Andrew Roddan) Dr. Katie Homann (George Stiefel) and Chrissy Homann; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Homann (Hans Zimmermann) ; and great grandchildren, Sierra and Sydney Otto-Roddan and Gavin Homann.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bill (March 5, 2008) and husband, Fred (March 30, 2008).
Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Des Moines Public Library.
