Lucille Tyson Harper, 100 of Jesup died Friday, January 12, 2018 under the care of Hospice of South Georgia. She was a graduate of Jesup High School and attended Valdosta Women’s College before graduating from the University of Georgia. After teaching Home Economics for several years in North Georgia, she married Dr. Fred Harper, another Wayne County native in 1943. As a Navy wife during WWII, she lived in Corpus Christi, Tx, San Diego, Calif., Seattle, Wash., Jacksonville, Fla. and Pennsylvania, Penn. before she and Dr. Harper moved back to Jesup to live, work and rear their family.

A communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Jesup, she was also active in civic and garden clubs and she judged flower shows across the state. Mrs. Harper returned again to teaching for many years, this time at Thomas G. Ritch Elementary School in Jesup, where she retired in 1977 with fond memories of her many second grade students. After retiring, she enjoyed her independence, still driving and traveling until she was 95 years old. Her 100th birthday celebration in December 2017 was a recent highpoint that many will always remember. Her family sends special thanks to all the friends who made that event possible and helped to celebrate this rare occasion.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Fred Harper; parents, Walter and Elizabeth Tyson; a sister, Leila Mae Tyson Downing and a brother, Cecil Tyson.

Survivors are two daughters, Tyson Harper and husband, Herbert Almeida of Rockaway, NJ, Mary Jo Harper of Jesup; a son, Rick and Linda Harper of Jesup; 6 grandchildren, Lindsey and Chris Gefaell, Hil Harper, Shon and Patricia Coleman, Stevi and Mike Dixon, Justin and Katy Almeida, Ashley Oxford; 5 great grandchildren, Gunner, Colt and Gatlin Dixon, Addy and Milly Almeida; several nieces and nephews and special friend and care giver, Joy Beasley.

Private graveside funeral services were held 3 P.M. Monday, January 15, 2018 at Jesup City Cemetery.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Lance Hendrix and his staff for her many years of care.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup is in charge of arrangements.
