Josiah was the son of Daniel Seal (1801-1852) and Catherine Miller Seal (1808-1884) who were both born in Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. Josiah was married four times and fathered eleven children. His first wife was Julia Ann Bradshaw whom he married in Dec. 1854. She was born Dec. 21, 1838 and died July 3, 1860. They had three children, Theodore Buchanan, Margaret Ann, and Julia Alice. His second marriage was to Almira Eusebia Bainbridge in Sept. 1860. She was born on June 16, 1844 and died on Oct. 7, 1870. There were six children by this marriage, Emeline, William Edmon, Mary Malvina, Josiah Daniel, Almira Delila, and Laura Adnia. Josiah married his third wife, Susanah Michael, on May 27, 1871. She was born Dec. 7, 1847 and died Jan. 1, 1894. They had two children, Ulysses Samuel and Elmore Franklin. Josiah married for the fourth and last time in Sept. 1895 to a widow, Mrs. Agnes Taylor. She was born Jan. 2, 1853 and died Oct. 18, 1945.

During the Civil War, Josiah served with the Kansas State Militia. An August 1, 1885 receipt from the Kansas Office of the Secretary of State shows he was reimbursed $13 for “Union Military Scrip” by action of the Price Raid Auditing Commission. The raid by Confederate General Sterling Price began on September 19, 1864 when about 12,000 Confederates crossed from Arkansas into Missouri, hoping to capture the state for the South.
