Sarah Louise Pearce Freeman
June 25, 1913-January 12, 2018

Sarah Freeman, aged 104, of Memphis, TN, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 12, 2018. The cause of death was smoke inhalation.

She is survived by 3 sons: John, of Southaven, MS; Roger, of Clarksville, TN; and Mark, of Nashville, TN. 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Sr., and by her firstborn son, Frank J

Born in Abbeville, MS in 1913, she moved to Memphis in 1916. She graduated from Central High School and was a member of Union Avenue Baptist Church, where she married Frank Marshall Freeman in 1938. She raised 4 sons, worked as a secretary at Whitehaven High School until age 65, then worked as a pink lady volunteer at Methodist South Hospital for 35 years, “retiring” from that job at age 100.

Busy as she was, the most important thing in her life was her relationship to Jesus Christ and His Lordship. Her family and friends revered her as an example of a Proverbs 31 “godly woman who served and loved her family.” An active member of Whitehaven Baptist Church since 1949, she enriched the lives of countless people. She taught 1st grade Sunday school for roughly 70 years.

She was one of the most loving, happiest and toughest people you would ever meet. No one used the word “love” in their communications more than she did. Her discipline and intelligence were legendary among the Freeman clan. Virtually every day of her adult life, she started the morning by completing the newspaper crossword puzzle in about five minutes. Everybody knew that if you took her on in a game of Scrabble, two results were inevitable: you would lose, and she would gently encourage you that maybe next time, you would win.

Those of us who have been deeply touched by her know that her passing marks the end of an era in our lives. We shall not see her like again.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Whitehaven Baptist Church, at 1 pm, Saturday, January 20, 2018. Visitation is at noon.

A private family graveside service is planned.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”.
