obituary: Dirk C. Van Zante died on March 24 at Mercy Medical Center. A memorial service will be held in West Des Moines at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway.

Pella family and friends are also invited to a reception in his memory to be held in Pella at a later date.

Dirk was born in Pella, Iowa on June 4, 1930, the son of Dick C. and Corinne Van Zante.

He graduated from Pella High School in 1948 and from Central College in 1952. He then attended Drake Law School where he received his JD Degree in 1955.

After graduation he joined the law firm of Van Zante and Klyn in Pella. He and his father later opened their own firm where he practiced law until 1971. During this time he also served as City Attorney for Pella.

Dirk was active in many community activities including the Pella Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was also a Boy Scout leader and coached Little League baseball.

In 1971, he moved to Des Moines where he became head of Probate in the Trust Department of Central National Bank (now Bank of America). After 24 years of service, he retired from the bank in 1995.

His community service in Des Moines included serving as Chairman of the Board, and later on the Advisory Committee, for the Convalescent Home for children (now Child Serve). Dirk was honored by the Iowa Bar Association in 2006 for his 50 years of membership.

In 2007 he was named Windsor Heights Citizen of the Year in honor of his 33 years of volunteer service on the board, and later as Chairman, of the city's Board of Adjustment.

He married Shirley Borland of Des Moines in 1970. They enjoyed travel and Dirk personally researched and planned their many trips in the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and other areas of the world. The ocean and beaches of Mexico and the Caribbean were among his favorite destinations, where they searched for seashells for their collection.

His many other interests included researching family history and genealogy, membership in the Civil War Round Table, collecting antique dog doorstops, gardening and photography.

He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 38 years, his brother Robert (Thekla) of Pella, his nephew Gary (Leslie) of Providence, RI and his many cousins. In addition, he leaves, Cody, the latest of his beloved Miniature Schnauzers.

His wry sense of humor, sharp intellect and steadfast devotion to friends and family will be greatly missed. The family especially wants to thank Dr. Robert Smith, Hermien Creger and his caring staff.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League or a charity of choice.
