Betty Meade Thornton passed away on Monday January 8th, 2018 in Kingsport, TN. Betty was born on Christmas Day, 1926 in Nickelsville, VA. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Jim Thornton, as well as her parents, John and Mary Meade, and her sister, Dorothy Miller and husband J.C.

Betty grew up in Grundy, VA and was a 1944 graduate of Grundy High School, where her father was a principal and her mother was a teacher. She later graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. Soon after graduating, she met Jim, fell in love with him and with his beloved Rappahannock County, and they were married in
September,1951. She worked hard to support him as he went through veterinary school at the University of Georgia. They moved to Gate City, VA in 1955 and started their family here, where several generations of her family were born and raised. Betty was a teacher for the Scott County School System until her retirement in 1988. She took great joy from teaching adult literacy. She belonged to First Baptist Church in Gate City, VA and later to Community Fellowship Baptist Church, where she remained an active member until her health prevented her from doing so. She had a love for travel, art, and reading, but most of all for her family.

She is survived by her children, Betsy Bledsoe and husband Randy, Ann Lacy and husband Randy, and Jim Thornton. She also leaves behind grandchildren Kate Taylor and husband David, Kelsey Jones and husband Mike, Jake Jennings and wife Lindsey, Thornton Lacy and fiancé Hollie Richardson, Eleisha Lacy, Schuyler Thornton and Miller Thornton and great grandchildren Ava, Trey, Sydnee, Colton, Eriannah, Milaniyah, Kanaliyah, and Legend. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren affectionately referred to her as “Georgie”. She is additionally survived by many special nieces and nephews.

The family would also like to extend their gratitude for the compassionate and loving care Mrs. Thornton received from Lois Arrington, Connie Baker, Alisha Cassel, and Katelyn Thomas.

The family will receive friends at Ewing Chapel in Gate City, VA, located behind the Scott County Vocational School, on Wednesday, January 10th from 5 to 7, with a funeral to follow. A private graveside service will be held at Lawson Confederate Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake, VA.
