Frankie Surrett Ballard, 87, of Candler, died on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center.

A native of Buncombe Co., Frankie was a daughter of the late Joseph Riley and Lillie Johnson Surrett. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Reva Weatherman, and brother, Ralph Surrett.

Frankie worked at American Enka/BASF for 40 years. Following retirement, she worked many more years as an assistant to the Sheriff with the Buncombe Co. Sheriff's Department. She loved her church, Oak Forest Presbyterian, where she served in several positions.

She is survived by her husband, Max Eugene Ballard, Sr.; daughters, Linda Gregory (Tommy) and Pattie Bremekamp (Ted); sons, Max Ballard, Jr. (Jen), and Doug Lance (Kay); sisters, Ruth Lance (Jim), and Jo Singleton (Harold); brother, John Surrett (Carolyn); grandchildren, Jennifer, Andy, Teddy, Teylor, Lily, Sydney, Max, III, Riley, Grady, Lynn, and Juwan; great-grandchildren, Brianna, Ryan, Faith, Jonathan, Juwan, Meyer, Christie, Lindsay, and Austin; and great-great-grandchildren, Christina, Wyatt, and Julian.

Frankie's family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, at Oak Forest Presbyterian Church, 880 Sand Hill Rd., Asheville. A private burial will take place at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, at a later date.

Frankie's family would like to express their love and appreciation to the nursing staff at Pisgah Manor and to Frankie's longtime caregiver and friend, Renée Ledford.
