Callie Thomas was a female Calico cat that lived with my cousin Durand's family in OKC OK. Don't recall how or who or why, but Callie came home with me on the train to Houston TX after a vacation from my job October 1975.
Durand drove us, Callie in a cage, to the train station where he got us a private compartment and tipped the porter $20.00 to assist us.
When I brought Callie to the apartment where I lived at the time, with my female dog, Sash, who instantly bonded with Callie as preferred BFF status from the git go, Callie, un-nerved from the trip, would have none of the 50 pounds of glorious dog that was Sash.
Callie jumped on top of my head and dug in with her claws. Sash, thinking we were playing, kept jumping up and down in front of us which didn't encourage Callie to jump off my head. So, there I was on Callie's first, hopping around from the pain of a cat on my head digging in with claws to stay on my head while I was trying to get her off, and an excited dog in the mix didn't help matters. Don't recall if I finally managed to dislodge Callie or she jumped off my head on her own, but the two did become BFF, and I have several photos of them together.
One year when I traveled to OK for a funeral, or maybe just on vacation, can't remember which, landlady Una (LaUna), who owned the three-unit dwelling, us on the top floor, took care of Sash and Callie while I was gone.
Sash mostly stayed at Una's house, they had a mutual admiration thing going, but I suspect Sash's was mostly because Una often fed her goodies Sash didn't get except at Grandma Una's house. At home Sash got canned dog food and that was it.
Our top floor an attic unit with stairs leading up to it from the front door. Because of this, Una, probably 75 when we first moved in, left Callie's food and water on the bottom stair steps so she wouldn't have to walk up the stairs. Although I appreciated Una taking care of my family while I was gone, she didn't remove anything or wash anything that Callie ate from, so I came back to a smelly weeklong mess on the bottom of the stairs, but Callie was just fine despite this.
Callie mostly kept to herself so I didn't think she would miss me while I was gone. Boy, was I wrong about that! When I came back, she couldn't get enough of me, kept rubbing against my legs. Callie had been so lonely while Mom was gone, that every time Una opened the door to leave her food, Callie rushed down the stairs; Callie never rushed for anything, not even chow time. I realized that Callie, despite having food every day, probably thought I had abandoned her, and was so glad to see me when I came back because she was relieved she had not been "left behind" or I wouldn't have been there. I said out loud, "Oh, Callie, you did miss me. I'll never leave you again." And I didn't. But on 04 August 1982 Callie left me to do some traveling of her own: unfortunately, her destination was to Rainbow Bridge (Sash joined her on 30 Jan 1986).
Una seemed to be more a dog person than a cat person. One day while Callie was outside in the yard space between the three units and Una's house, a bird kept swooping down close to Callie, close enough that Callie would move or shake her head in annoyance with the bird swooping. The mama bird may have had a nest of bird babies nearby and maybe that a stern warning to Callie not to "come a little bit closer" to her family. Mamas can be fierce when it comes to their babies. Anyhoo, I'm no bird expert, don't know if Una was, but she charged into the yard from her back door accusing Callie of not minding her cat manners, of messing with the bird family. I didn't know if Callie had or not, but this cat mom hotly defended her cat child before the Bird Police--Una--could insist Callie assume the position and stand trial on these as yet unproven (to me) charges. Is it not innocent until proven guilty? Don't recall how the Bird Police raid ended, but it was peaceful. Probably I just escorted the accused back to our attic unit and that was that!
On a different day, I was in that same yard space and heard Callie meowing in what seemed distress so I started from one end of the yard, systematically searching the yard because I couldn't see her or locate her by the meowing. (Lots of greenery, bushes in the yard, where she could hide, reason for the searching.) When I finally found her, I was disgusted, that is, had searched, worried when she was perfectly all right. Sounded like distressed meowing to me, guess it wasn't, but good she was fine although had wasted time attempting to rescue a cat that did not need a rescue.... maybe in need of catnip?
On 04 Aug 1982, while outside the three-unit dwelling, Callie somehow consumed poison. By the time I got her to the vet he said it was too late, the poison had been in her system too long to save her life. Guess Callie had used up her nine lives.
Never again did I allow future cats to roam outside alone, and I firmly believe all cats should live indoors always.
Never found out how Callie consumed the poison, but if I had not let her go out, the poison would not have gone in. Callie was "put to sleep" at the vet clinic and woke up on Rainbow Bridge.
Callie, some sweet day I will "go to sleep" and wake up on Rainbow Bridge with you.
Love you. Miss you. Mom.
