Melba Elaine Smith (nee Johnson), passed from this life on November 25, 2020, in Round Rock, Texas at the age of 87.

Melba was born in Dimmitt, Texas on November 6, 1933, the sixth of eight siblings.

Melba attended Dimmitt High School and played women’s basketball before dribbling was legal.

After graduation, Melba went to business school in Lubbock, Texas where she met her future husband, Moffett Smith, then a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. They were happily married for thirty-five years and represented their country all over the world.

As a young mother, Melba traveled outside of Texas for the first time to join Moffett in North Africa, where he was serving with the U.S. Air Force. Melba began her civil service career after Moffett joined the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, working as an executive secretary for the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations (OSI) before joining the U.S. Department of State herself. During their marriage, they lived in Tripoli, Libya; Bonn and Frankfurt, Germany; Khartoum, Sudan; Paris, France; Ankara, Turkey; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Blantyre and Lilongwe, Malawi; Springfield, Virginia; and Vienna, Austria. Melba set a beautiful table, gracefully exercising soft diplomacy on behalf of the United States. Melba continued her service after Moffett retired, and he joined Melba on her assignments until his death in 1985. Melba served in Nassau, Bahamas; San Salvador, El Salvador; and Washington, D.C. Upon retirement, Melba moved to Lubbock, Texas, and then to Georgetown, Texas. She will be remembered as a witty and elegant hostess who, despite traveling the world, always said there was no place she’d rather be than with her family.

Melba is survived by her daughter, Diane Parker; her sons Calvin, Darrel and, David Smith; her brother, Jimmie Johnson; grandchildren, Andrew Rivas, Vanessa Clouston, Jason Smith, Mathew Smith, Allegra Parker, and Riley Parker; and her great-grandson, Adrian Rivas. Melba was preceded in death by her husband, Moffett Smith; her parents, Claude and Dora Johnson; her daughter, Deborah Rivas; her sisters, Rosa Mae Shepard, Alene Martenson, Imogene McKinney, La Quita Thacker, Beverly Russell; and her brother, C.J. Johnson.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the family will not host a visitation or memorial service at this time. A graveside memorial will be held at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery 14501 N Interstate Hwy 35, Pflugerville, TX 78660 Friday, December 4, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplain Shirley Haulotte of Paloma Hospice officiating. The Gabriels Funeral Chapel and Crematory 393 N, I-35, Georgetown, TX 78628 will be handling funeral arrangements.

Rather than sending flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org or to Paloma Hospice; 3000 Joe Dimaggio Blvd. Suite 84; Round Rock, Texas 78665.
