Evelyn C. Laing

1/20/1912 - 9/16/2012

Beloved. A word that describes Evelyn Coleman Laing from the perspective of anyone who knew her. Daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend; the number of lives she touched, molded and inspired in her 100 years on this earth is truly remarkable. This genuine southern lady was known for her wisdom, gentle spirit and loving kindness to all.

Born on her family's farm in Morehouse parish on January 20, 1912, she passed from this life on September 16, 2012 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, W.R. Laing and both of her children, James Laing and Virginia Laing Newman.

She is survived by her granddaughters, Annice Ernst and husband Jay of Monroe, Angela Washam of Shreveport; her great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Timothy Ernst and Nathan and Matthew Washam; numerous nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Though she never worked outside the home, she was known for her amazing southern cooking and beautiful gardens, particularly her roses. These talents became a legacy enjoyed by each generation that followed her. Her favorite activities were reading and caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and admired her strength, independence and Christian compassion.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 20, 2012, in the chapel at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with the Reverend John Mabray officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and from 1:00 PM until service time Thursday at Mulhearn Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jay Ernst, Tim Ernst, Nathan Washam, Jay Moore, Johnny Risher, and Daniel Griffon. Honorary pallbearer will be Jimmy Risher.
