Memorial Day at Bethel
Memorial Day was appropriately observed at Bethel Cemetery, in Center township. Rev. Hughs, pastor in charge, preached a very eloquent and impressive on Sabbath preceding. It was a masterly effort and went home to the hearts of his hearers. The Jacksonville Post G.A.R. arranged to attend on Tuesday, 30th, and requested the ladies to furnish the necessary flowers and they responded with a profusion of the most handsome wreaths. Wm Burns was selected to locate and mark the graves of the dead soldiers and he performed his duty faithfully and well, and when the procession arrived he had every soldier's grave marked with a flag. After the ceremonies of strewing flowers on the graves, Rev. Hughs made a few appropriate remarks and Rev. Bracken made a short and interesting speech. The prayer was offered by H.B. McIntire and the ceremonies were over. The following is a list of graves as found by Mr. Burns. Any that he missed he should be informed of as soon as possible in order that his list may be correct:
