Son of Mary Ellen Morton and Jonas Hartsell. He married Margaret 'Maggie' Tucker in Stanly Co, NC, on 30 Sep 1895, who was his own cousin.

According to the 1910 Census, wife Margaret had had 8 children with 5 alive. Known children were Berla, Loretta, Vaughn, Gladie (died as an infant), Evie and Jack. Wife Margaret died in Arkansas 24 Oct 1943.

His WWI Draft Card of Sep 1918 shows Margaret as his wife and he was residing in DeRoche, Hot Springs, AR. Jonas was unable to write his own name on the card.

In 1930, Jonas, his wife and grandson are located in Lone Hill, AR, where he was a retail grocery merchant:

His daughter Berla was residing in California when he died and she provided the information for his death cert. Berla married Thomas Bozeman after his death and she died in Paradise, Butte, CA, on 20 May 1982.
