Obituaries

A native of Chicago, Father Kuhn joined the Society of Jesus in 1918 before attending St. Louis University, where he earned an undergraduate and master's degree in philosophy. He took his theological degree in St. Mary's in Kansas and was ordained to the priesthood in 1931. He later attended Loyola University in Chicago where he earned a master's degree in history. He came to the University of Detroit as a teacher in 1934, and in 1965 he was named assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences as well. Wayne County Circuit Judge Joseph B. Sullivan, a 1947 U-D graduate, described Father Kuhn as one of the toughest teachers he ever had. "He had a tremendous memory and used to tell his students,'You'll all flunk gloriously,' " Sullivan said. Despite Father Kuhn's warning, Sullivan recalled proudly that he earned an A in his two courses with Father Kuhn. THE REV. Malcolm Carron, SJ, chancellor of the university, recalled learning history from Father Kuhn as an 18-year-old freshman. "He knew virtually everyone at the university and was extremely well loved, Father Carron said. In addition to his duties at the university, Father Kuhn also undertook work at parishes throughout the Detroit and suburban area. "He was a great spiritual counselor and gave of himself very generously," said the Rev. Kenneth MacKinnon, of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

The Rev. Alphonse F. Kuhn, SJ, teacher and counselor to thousands of University of Detroit liberal arts students, is dead at age 80. In his career of teaching, counseling and tutoring U-D students from 1934 to 1971, Father Kuhn became acquainted with nearly every student who attended the University. Many of Detroit's most prominent leaders were introduced to the history of Western civilization by Father Kuhn's courses, which often attracted 300 students a semester. Father Kuhn died Saturday after a brief illess at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital. FRIENDS say Father Kuhn was also a great preacher with a powerful voice and an Father Kuhn, whose courses often attracted 300 students a semester. Church in Plymouth, who counted Father Kuhn as a 30-year friend. "He led a full life and he remained dedicated to the very last minute," Father MacKinnon said. A mass of resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gesu Church, Quincy at Santa Maria. Burial will be at Colombiere College in
