MERRITT ISLAND – Carolyn J. "Carrie" Friend passed away peacefully, Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at Courtenay Springs with her family by her side.
A native of Jacksonville Florida and graduate of the University of Florida, she moved to Merritt Island in 1962.
Carrie worked at Kennedy Space Center for more than 23 years in support and service to the U. S. Space Shuttle Program and Launch Vehicle Operations. She began her career as an Administrative Assistant in the COMM group and moved through Programming to become a Shuttle Application Software Engineer for the Launch Processing System at United Space Alliance.
Among the many awards received throughout her career at KSC, her proudest moment was when she received the coveted Space Flight Awareness Award prior to retiring in 2005.
Carrie will be lovingly remembered as a dear mother to her son and daughter-in-law, Michael P. and Theresa B. Friend; daughter, Dr. Vicki K Friend; beloved Mimi to her grandchildren, Rachel Nicole, Kyle Christian and Hunter Michael Friend; and dear sister-in-law and aunt to Marjorie, Alan, Melissa and Tammie Rock. She is predeceased by her loving parents and brother, Bernard, Joan and Richard Rock.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge.
