Major League Baseball Player. In twelve seasons, he was a career .272 hitter with 132 home runs. Three time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner. He played first base and outfield. Signed by the New York Yankees in 1951 after high school graduation. During the off seasons, he attended Southwest Missouri State, where he played basketball. Along with future big league teammate Jerry Lumpe, they led the school to the NAIA basketball championships in 1952 and 1953. He continued to play and excel in the Yankee's farm system. Missing the 1954 and 1955 seasons while serving in the U.S. Army. Promoted to the major leagues in 1956, he was a member of the Yankees World Series teams of 1956-1958. After the 1959 season he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics in a multi-player deal that sent Roger Maris to the Yankees. His best career year was with the A's in 1962, playing in all 162 games he hit .308 with 25 home runs, 117 RBI and a .412 OBP. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for Jim Gentile after the 1963 season. He finished his career with Boston in 1968. Following his playing days, he was a baseball scout and an insurance agent.
