Vee was born on July 14, 1924 in Mount Olive, Mississippi to her parents, Peter V. McQueen and Alner Warren McQueen. She was affectionately called “Sis” by her family. She was one of 12 children growing up. Peter & Alner’s oldest child was 27 years older than their youngest. The McQueen family home was a busy place with 12 children. Peter & Alner worked diligently to be able to support their family. Every child had what they needed. Through their efforts their home was never lacking and was always filled with love.

Vee graduated from Collins High School. During her high school year’s, she began working at Camp Shelby. She continued working there after high school and this would be where she would meet her first husband, Paul Smith. Their courtship was brief, and they were soon married. The two went on to have two children of their own Paula Vee & Constance Lynn Smith.

While working at Drumling Country Club Vee met Sherman Minard in 1965. The two became friends and were married in 1968. Vee always looked forward to spending the holidays with family. She would meticulously decorate her home and cooking for her family was never a chore she always looked forward to sharing her efforts in the kitchen to make the holiday’s a little bit more special for her family.

When it came to cooking, Vee was excellent. Like everything else she did in her life she prided herself in making that extra special effort to make everything perfect. Her comfort food that everyone looked forward to included, homemade apple pies and fried chicken.

Vee enjoyed spending time in her garden around her home. She could be found tending to the many different flowers throughout her yard. She also enjoyed playing Bridge. She studied strategy and could be found reading up on the best way to play her hand. She eventually became a Life Master at playing Bridge. She found great comfort in decorating and making her house a home.

Vee enjoyed animals, music and watching TV. Her favorite musicians included Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. TV shows she looked forward to watching and sharing with her daughters included; Shark Tank, Forensic Files, Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune.

Even after all the years that Vee lived in the North East never lost her southern accent. Thankfully, she never lost her Southern charm either. Her favorite way to refer to the people she knew and loved was to call them “honey.”

Vee was meticulous. The presentation of her clothing, home, meals cooked for family and everything she did in her life was always top notch. She prided herself in doing everything to the very best of her ability.

She was hardworking, extremely organized, and had a remarkable memory. She found an inner drive to always do things well and always, always by the rules. Her love of life and drive are often imitated, but rarely duplicated. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter V. McQueen and Alner Warren McQueen; her husband, Paul I. Smith and Sherman J. Minard; three sisters, Ocie Herrington, Ora Chain, and Gladys Cobb; and eight brothers, Leonard McQueen, Carl McQueen, Truitt McQueen, Ramsey McQueen, Otho McQueen, Graham McQueen, Bennie McQueen, and Dudley McQueen.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Vee Smith and Constance Lynn Smith, both of Rochester, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Verona Street Animal Shelter, 184 Verona Street, Rochester, New York, 14608.
