Russ was preceded in death by his parents, son Brian, brothers Raymond, Harold, Robert, Donald, Lawrence "Larry", in-laws, best friends and traveling companions Joseph and Claudette Munson.
Russ enlisted in the US Navy a few weeks after graduating from Menomonie High School in June 1957. After attending several service schools, Russ was assigned to Naval Air transport Squadron Three based at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey and served there until he was honorably discharged in December 1960. After working for a year as an insurance investigator out of Trenton, N.J., Russ returned to Menomonie in 1961 and was hired as an assistant manager with Beneficial Finance in Eau Claire, Wi. After a five year stint with Beneficial, he resigned his position as manager of one of their St. Paul offices in January 1967, as he had accepted a position as a collector in the corporate sales finance department of the Northwestern National Bank of St. Paul. The bank later renamed Norwest Bank and then Wells Fargo Bank. After two years, Russ was elected by the bank's Board of Directors to the position of Corporate Sales Finance Officer.
